Surge in travel insurance demand among Indian travellers in 2025 – TravelBiz Monitor: India travel news, travel trends, tourism

The travel insurance sector has seen significant growth in the first quarter of 2025, with an increase of 18.95% in sales compared to the previous year. This increase is greatly attributed to the increase in disposable income and a growing awareness of the need for comprehensive travel insurance. Travelers choose more and more for policies that offer improved coverage characteristics, particularly for medical emergencies, travel cancellations and visa rate reimbursements. Countries such as Germany, France and Switzerland remain the main travel destinations, contributing to the greatest demand for specialized travel insurance.

Germany has become a key market for business and leisure travelers, with 20% of travelers who choose it as their destination. Switzerland and the Netherlands are also gaining popularity, promoting the demand for adventure sports coverage and other custom accessories. Interestingly, traveling women have seen a significant increase in international trips, with a 19% increase in female trips compared to a 13% growth in male travelers. Many women opt for more exhaustive insurance policies, including travel cancellation and emergency medical assistance.

The visa rate reimbursement pilot has become a popular complement, especially following the 15.70% 15.70% visa rejection rate in 2023, which leads to financial losses for travelers. Consequently, 20% of travelers are now adding this characteristic to their policies to protect against possible visa rejections. In addition, 62% of travelers opt for the coverage of USD 250,000 or more, which reflects a change towards a stronger medical protection during international trips.

The travel insurance demand is especially high between February and April, conducted by spring and summer travel seasons. A notable 76% of travelers now buy policies 45-50 days before departure, highlighting a greater awareness of travel uncertainties and a proactive approach to ensure comprehensive coverage. This trend indicates that Indian travelers are prioritizing tranquility and preparation, especially to interruptions and increased medical care costs abroad.
