The United States Department of State has once again issued its travel notice for Bangladesh, urging US citizens to reconsider trips by citing civil concerns, crimes and terrorism.
The updated notice, issued on April 18 (US time), retains a designation of ‘reconsider trips’ for most parts of the country. Meanwhile, Chittagg Hill treaties, which include the districts of Khagrachari, Rangamati and Bandarban, remain under a warning of ‘Level 4: Do not travel’. The advice cites continuous risks of community violence, terrorism, kidnappings and political disturbances in the region.
While the frequency of large -scale clashes has decreased, manifestations and protests continue to occur in Bangladesh. The State Department warned that even peaceful events can be introduced rapidly to violence and advised travelers to avoid all political events and great public meetings.
Travel restrictions for United States government staff
According to the notice, US government employees in Bangladesh are subject to significant travel restrictions. Within Dhaka, their movements are largely limited to the diplomatic enclave unless specific authorization is granted. Travel outside the capital will require prior approval, with the exception of visits to Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet, which are considered relatively safer. The United States Embassy also pointed out that their ability to help US citizens in emergencies, particularly outside Dhaka, is hindered by infrastructure limitations and the availability of local emergency services.

CAUTION MEASURES FOR US travelers
The State Department urged US citizens who still choose to travel to Bangladesh to take several important precautions. Travelers are recommended to register in the SMART travelers registration program (STEP) to receive timely alerts and ensure that the United States embassy can locate them in case of emergency.
In the case of a robbery or attempted robbery, travelers should not resist, prioritizing their safety over everything else, said the United States government. Given the limitations in local health infrastructure, Americans are also encouraged to buy comprehensive travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation.
In addition, travelers have also been urged to completely review the last security report of the United States country, as well as the current health guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) before departure.
